The event was attended by the researcher's widow, Nícia Wendel de Magalhães, the president of SBPC, Helena Nader, the president of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Hernan Chaimovich, and the vice-president of the Fundação de Amparo to Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (Fapesp), Eduardo Moacyr.
The collection is the result of a project that was created by Magalhães and presented to the SBPC in , during Professor Ennio Candotti's second term as president of the institution. The objective was to bring together the biographies of renowned Brazilian scientists, who were no longer alive, from the areas of human sciences, exact sciences and life sciences. About the work In , an organizing committee was formed and the project then began to come to life. Photo: Reproduction Photo: Reproduction The president of the SBPC compared the collection “Humanists and Scientists of Brazil” with “Cientistas of Brazil – testimonials”, a book released in to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the SBPC. “In both initiatives, our purpose is to show Brazil some of its main scientists, their professional trajectories, their thinking and their contributions to science and the country”, she states. In the work, however, published in a single volume, it was the scientists themselves who told their stories, through interviews.
In this collection, the biographies are narrated by one or more authors, “usually co-workers who became friends throughout their lives”, as Nader says. The “Humanists and Scientists of Brazil” collection is made up of three volumes – “Life Sciences”, “Exact Sciences” and 'Human Sciences” -, which total pages, with the stories of Brazilian scientists and intellectuals.
