I agree completely Tom. No one can be Bilko after Phil Silvers and look right. Robert Culp seems a good choice (if a choice has to be made - but he lacks those facial expressions Silvers could do so well), and I remember him mainly because of I Spy. I have no antipathy towards S Martin but he didn't suit the role. Amazing how the Phil Silvers show can still make you laugh after 50 years!! The US army probably hasn't changed all that much. P You really crack me up, P! "The U.S. Army probably hasn't changed all that much?" You are too much!! ;D

Boy, MM that took a while! I am not army stuff and all armies seem to be led by senior officers that are much older than their men and who have an outlook that can be two generations in the past. The US army has, like all armies, changed enormously in technology but not in any other way. The jeeps in the motor pool may be up-to-date but the men who service them will recognise themselves in The Phil Silvers Show. I'm guessing here, but I expect the US (and British) army all know characters like Bilko. Life in an army camp will be going on as it ever did (except there are women there now, so one could even conceivably be a female Bilko somewhere - help!!). I think all this is the reason for the perennial popularity of the P S Show. Many 'worthy' films about The Army show a well-disciplined, stout-fellas, there to defend us to the last and glad to do it, smartly turned-out professional, band of brothers - while Bilko shows us what it's REALLY like ;D ;D Nope! I don't think the army (US, British or any other army in a democracy) has changed at all!
Cheers P

I chose All in the Family because of its groundbreaking comedy. My grandmother and I used to watch it together on Saturday nights.

I agree with you all about Phil Silvers' Bilko. A legend and an all time great. The supporting cast were so good too. Some of the people who got their break via this show: Dick van Dyke, George Kennedy, Dan Fraser (Capt. McNeil in Kojak), Neil Simon (writing of course). I'd be interested to hear forum member's favorite episode. Mine is where bing Crosby visits the camp. Brilliant stuff and timeless too.

I've voted for M*A*S*H because it makes me laugh and think, too. I watched it first time round, watched the repeats and the repeats of the repeats. It is perhaps the very best example of a film being translated into a successful TV series, proving there was much mileage left in the idea. However, for a modern series I would go for Scrubs - I regularly laugh out loud. I watch so few sitcoms it isn't difficult to choose. The 'middle' series (between the other two) would be Red Dwarf.

I'll go for Bilko too although I do like Beverley Hillbillies, Addams Family and many of the others mentioned above.
I'd also like to agree about the comments apertaining to Steve Martin & the Bilko film, appalling casting.
I'll vote for The Court Martial as my favourite Bilko "moment" when Zippo the chimp picks up the phone & Silvers ad libs a line about him (The Chimp) wanting to change his lawyer.
As for all round episode I like The Singing Contest where they think they're entering a Singing Contest but they've actually volunteered for a suicide mission testing deadly mosquito bites, extremely funny.

I voted for The Golden Girls. It's incredibly funny, the cast has great chemistry, and it approaches important issues.

“Everybody loves Raymond” is one of the best sitcoms of all time. Because it is based on Romano and his family’s real stories it comes as being very realistic and relatable.
