With the exit of "Everybody Loves Raymond" at the end of the 2004-05 TV season, many television experts/critics are lamenting the "end" of the era of the situation comedy. The question, therefore, is: What (in your opinion) has been the BEST sitcom in TV history?

My vote goes to The Beverly Hillbillies, which provided consistently funny episodes over a substantial period, from what was quite a simple scenario. There was a 'warmth' about The Beverly Hillbillies which many sitcoms, although funny, seemed to lack. Also a quality cast.
Bewitched and The Odd Couple did run it close, though.

p.s. Where were the Munsters and the Addams Family?

Where were the Munsters and the Addams Family? Good choice, Tom! And if you will check out my Top 100 TV Shows Of all-time elsewhere on this forum, you will find TBH in the Top 20! And the answer to your 2nd query is that someone may use the "None of the above" choice for those sitcoms that are not listed, as there is a limited amount of space for polling use.

How do you vote on this page, please? I would vote for Bewitched as it still makes me laugh out loud. Rather different is M*A*S*H, watched it first time around, watched the repeats, and watched the repeats of the repeats, and I would place it second, only because it's thought-provoking rather than laugh out loud sort of prog. I need a good, clean escapist laugh and these days I don't like any new sit-coms except Scrubs. P

I voted for "All In The Family", because it was such a groundbreaking program; it tackled subjects that were NEVER aired before in a sitcom format: racism, rape, infidelity, blunt discussion about sexual matters, etc. And let's not forget that it was a very popular show for a long time, as a part of the highly sucessful CBS lineup of comedies (MTM, B.Newhart, MASH, etc.)

P Here's how, P: When you click on Classic Sitcoms, you will be shown the poll question page: on the left side of the page are little circles in front of the sitcom's name. Click on the circle in front of "Bewitched" & bingo!

Thanks, I knew that having voted before, but for some reason the little circles were not there. I managed to post OK so I was logged on. The circles are there now, though so I shall vote at last. Cheers P

Now my problem is that my vote has not been recorded. Is this because it is my second posting and one is only allowed one vote (of course)? Can my vote be recorded, please MM :-) Cheers P

I think Phil Silvers was brilliant as Bilko. They totally ruined it when they made it into a movie starring Steve Martin. I'm no fan of Martin's, anyway, but I think he was totally miscast in the role. In my opinion, a much better choice would have been Robert Culp, who actually sounds quite like Phil Silvers, and has the same type of comedic style.

I agree completely Tom. No one can be Bilko after Phil Silvers and look right. Robert Culp seems a good choice (if a choice has to be made - but he lacks those facial expressions Silvers could do so well), and I remember him mainly because of I Spy. I have no antipathy towards S Martin but he didn't suit the role. Amazing how the Phil Silvers show can still make you laugh after 50 years!! The US army probably hasn't changed all that much. P
