Who's your favourite film composer?
Mine would have to be John Barry, simply because of all the memorable film music and songs he has produced over the years.
The list includes most of the James Bond films (including the incredible Goldfinger and We Have All the Time in the World); Zulu; Out of Africa; Dances With Wolves; Born Free; The Ipcress File, and many more. There were also many TV themes, not to mention his pop career in the early 60s.
I find it unbelievable that he has not been knighted, given the fact that there are many with knighthoods who have made much smaller contributions to music.
I realise that the words were supplied by others, but the orchestral arrangements are superb in their own right.
Right, then. Let's have your favourites. ;D

In John Barry's favour, I'd like to point out that in a career spanning nearly half a century, he has produced the scores for over fifty films, along with television themes.
His music has spanned many genres - pop, beat, blues, jazz (including his Grammy Award winning score for 'The Cotton Club'), ballad and classical.
He was around at the start of the British pop scene of the late 50s, and is still going strong.
It is, in my opinion, this longevity along with the scope of his music that puts John Barry above the others.

My favourites are Max Steiner, he made spectacular music, Now voyager has one of the best scores of all time, and Bernard Herrmann, because of his amazing scores in the Hitchcock movies. Brilliant.
