A Q for Tom - did you know the recording (Japanese) that was used in an ad recently. I seem to remember you did but I'm not sure where to look to see. As I only knew the Kenny Ball version but loved the melody, I think this version is beautiful and would like to hear it all. So Tom, can you help? or, indeed, does anyone else know? Thanks ;D ;D Cheers P

Glad to oblige, peridot.
Sukiyaki was a vocal hit in 1963 for Kyu (pronounced 'cue') Sakamoto and reached no. 6 in the UK charts. It was originally titled from its first line - 'Ue o muite', but its title was changed to Sukiyaki because it was thought to be more appealing to music fans in the west.
Sakamoto was unfortunately killed at the age of 43 when a Japan Airlines 747 crashed near Tokyo in 1985.
The English translation of the first line is 'I look up when I walk'.
I hope that helps, peridot. ;D
