I was wondering when the billboard singles chart first appeared?
The UK singles chart began on November 14, 1952. Before that, I think it was sheet music sales that counted.

I was wondering when the billboard singles chart first appeared? The UK singles chart began on November 14, 1952. Before that, I think it was sheet music sales that counted. Tom On the Billboard issue dated July 27, 1940, the Best Sellers In Stores first appeared in the magazine. (The 1st #1 record was the Tommy Dorsey/Frank Sinatra/Pied Pipers song "I'll Never Smile Again")Then with the issue dated August 4, 1958, the HOT 100 Singles Chart was debuted (Rick Nelson's "Poor Little Fool" was the 1st #1), which is still in use today, even though its methodology has changed several times over the years. (There was also in the mid-50's a Juke Box Chart, as well as a Most Played by Disc Jockeys Chart, and a top 100 chart, but until the advent of the Hot 100, the Best Sellers Chart was considered the authoritive one.) Other major music chart debuts - Country-1944; R&B/Soul-1942; Adult Contemporary/Easy Listening-1961. Billboard Magazine itself debuted in 1894!
